starting journals, hospital

i started doing art in my journals in college, and painting time was the only time i felt sane and in control.  it took me years to realize i needed this consistently. i did projects here and there, and in between was a wreck. i was in and out of therapy, on and off meds (heavy anti-depressants at this point) and basically just trying to get from day to day. i did hold down a job at a group home for autistic adults, which was the most amazing job i could have imagined. these clients were some of the most interesting people i ever met. as i did art with them, i learned how powerful it was as a communication tool. i began doing more for myself, and started a collage journal - cut and paste mostly. if you knew how many hours and days i spent cutting up magazines...it only helped part of my life.  my job was challenging and my life was getting serious.

at some point i gave up, and everything crashed down on me. i took a bunch of meds and ended up in the psych ward for 3 weeks. as i laughed at those aides who tried to coerce me into the craft room to make potholders, i found strips of embroidered ribbons and tassels. i wanted them. so i started a "pillow" of hoarded scraps which got bigger and bigger over the 3 weeks i was there. then i had my boyfriend (now my husband) bring in my journal and magazines and glue, and i was allowed to have scissors under supervision. apparently they hadn't noticed the sculpture i created out of the wire hanger i found in my room (?!). when i had my things in my hands i was strong - i had a place to hide and a means to have authority over my mind. i remember the curiosity and interest my art and supplies triggered..and wide-eyed glares from the social workers and nurses. made me smile....

inspired!

so, here it is. my last post as someone trying to come off as a happy, well-adjusted "artist" type person. i can't live anymore without making art.  it takes a large part of my time.  most of that time i like to be alone or not bothered. my kids and husband and family suffer, if you call not having me in their face "suffering" (i call it a blessing!)...

here are my first two collages since i made the conscious decision to start making them again. i have been inspired by scrapiteria, fantasyrooms, and craftydogma TO JUST NAME THREE!!!  actually, here is my flickriver box and link-mania where you can spend the rest of your week dreamily gazing at some of the most awesome artists' work....THANK YOU to all of those who so willingly put their hearts out there to share talent we would have never seen if it wasn't for this thing we call the INTERNET (loud deep voice with slight echo).

ps: for more descriptive anecdotes about these pieces, please jump over to my flickr. thanks for stopping by!

sneak peek --- my ETSY

***** ETSY SHOP OPENING SOON!!!! *****

well, i have the storefront, and am madly matching a mostly minute menagerie of collage scraps!  i have sooo much to share that creating these kits has been taking up much of my time...it is so very much more challenging than i thought.  the OCD part of me doesn't want to give up, so again, my passion for "art" has been therapeutic.

here are two items that will be up as soon as i put together several kits to post.  i hope to offer things that others don't have access to for their ATC /ACEO / inch-work / collage projects.  i will also be letting go of some back issues of Somerset Studio and assorted Stampington and scrapbook idea books and magazines. vintage and retro-ish styles are my loves, and i have at least 50 discarded and unwanted books to pull apart for sharing. i hope to add variety kits as well, including some of my vintage buttons and laces, as well as some new fibers and scrap papers that i buy too many of. please check back if you are in need of scrap-packs!!!  thanks.

putting it online

i don't know how so many of you keep up with scanning and photographing your work to post daily or even weekly! i am a project abandoner, and have tried to take chunks of time to just put stuff up here, but have really lagged -mostly due to potty training and heat. i am also still confused (or i make myself confused) about how to post different things. i love the gallery looks, love the well-organized, simple websites with big, definitive buttons that take you exactly where you want to be, and i like flickr for it's huge art crowd, but not so much for the navigation within a specific page...although i haven't tried to actually open a page of my own. i keep telling myself what i tell myself every minute of every day, 'i can change and adapt as i go, life is SHORT! just do it already!'
ok - so i will go scan -
here is a postcard-sized piece i collaged (magazine scraps), it is an art muse/goddess.

SCRAP-BOT

so, we are a family who likes to spend weekends not doing much, it doesn't help that we don't have any money right now, but both my kids love arts and crafting.  rodney is getting to enjoy it as well. i need a much larger table...
one boring sunday in the 100 degree summer, i took out my big trunk-box of jewelry scraps so we could make ROBOTS!   luk has been into the movie "robots" so he had the greatest reaction when the box was opened..."wo-ow!"
it was especially cool because i would guess half of what is in there is from my grandfather, who was a watch and clock repairman. he used to give me little boxes full of parts and old watches.
then my BF kimmy (hi, kimmy!) and i would go from estate sale to rummage sale pillaging any and all the old costume jewelry and junk we could... man, i miss those days...we would go home and spend hours breaking stuff apart (gasp) and sorting and sharing - oh, so very therapeutic!  then we had to start collecting vials and coin bottles to keep our ever-expanding collection of beads and clasps, pins and jump rings...oh, drewel....now, to put it all to use.
well, here is what i made.

woodburned cat & pysanky (eggs)

it began with a small, cheap woodburning iron.  i LOve the smell of burning wood - ok, really, it's one of my favorite things in the world. i sooo miss the small, woodburning fireplace in our last house...
anyway, i used to take scraps and beads and burn patterns onto them. then the carving thing came over me, and i made this by first carving my image then burning the patterns on top.
my dad has done woodwork forever, and took the opportunity to buy me a really awesome iron - a DETAIL MASTER from Leisure Times.  wow - that baby cuts detail like butter - i neeed to get that back out....
well, here is the cat block

*******************************************************

then i made some eggs, styled after pysanky, Ukrainian Easter eggs.  they are not finished, they are burned but i think they need a few coats of varnish? any opinions or suggestions?

CALL TO FRIENDS + FAMILY

i have been working on new types of COLLAGES and would like to put out a call to my family and friends to collect for me things you think are interesting -PAPER AND OTHERWISE-, generally referred to as "ephemera". i want to use bits of everyday written/visual elements, incorporating them into collages. things i am looking out for are mostly vintage/old -as in 30's to 70's but new/unique is great too, unusual and weird are perfect!. condition does not matter, as long as it doesn't smell of smoke...and it doesn't cost anything. :)

· unique ticket stubs, passes
· handwritten notes (illegible fine), lists, letters, homework, recipes, directions
· old address books (i like the divider tabs)
· receipts, tags (price, sold, delivery, rare or strange)
· old mail, envelopes, stamps, unique postmarks (foreign is a bonus)
· old postcards, or newer corny ones
· old or new photos, worse is better, blurry/weird colors great, subject irrelevant
· pages from old/unusual books, old typed paper, ledgers
· old playing/flash cards, cards from games
· weird instruction manuals (need not be english), illustrations are a plus
· old pix from science, medical, nature, animal books/literature
· holy cards, religious pictures (will be given due reverence)
· little scraps of paper with cool numbers, words, pictures or letters
· vintage greeting cards (signed is fine) or wrapping paper pieces

anyway, you get the idea...pieces/parts are fine, whatever i don't use will be passed on to other collage artists or RECYCLED. the challenge in this is to look harder at common "trash" and see potential in odd or discarded items.
i have MANY other interests as far as collecting goes, there is a too-much-information list of my collections on my blog if you are bored. i will be adding pix of those some time soon, i see there are MANY bloggers out there interested in collecting and sharing the love! gotta do my little part...

thanks so much for reading + visiting, try something creative every day!

other stuff i'm doing....

stuff i have been addicted to this month: downloading and organizing new free fonts (no reason), sucking-in pictures of vintage seahorses and mermaids (off ebay) - for inspiration - ....and searching for stuff i've not searched before for mix-media art: gumball charms-vintage mostly, old flash cards or game cards with cool pictures, german scrap - silver, mardi-gras beads, and vintage japanese plastic cabochons.......oooooh, want to expand my room full of little boxes full of joy....
